Perkins Family..
So far I have tracked the Perkins’s back to Philip Perkins born around 1800 possibly in London and north of the river at Wapping. Although they didn’t stay there for long as they settled in Rotherhithe. Click on the links above to learnmore about the individual family members.
The Perkins families lived mainly around Rotherhithe, famous now for it’s tunnel. The Thames Tunnel built by the Brunels was the first sub-aqueous tunnel in the world and provided a walkway to the north bank of the Thames at Wapping. It was later taken over for railway traffic, and on 12 June 1908 was joined by the Rotherhithe Tunnel to Limehouse for motor traffic, opened by the Prince of Wales and Richard Atkinson Robinson, Chairman of the London County Council. Before that it was famous for it’s docks. The docks provided work but it was casual and badly paid leading to local poverty. Living conditions were tough. Open sewers and poor quality housing were common. It was not until the 1930’s when the worst slums were demolished and better houses built. During the second world war Rotherhithe was one of the most heavily bombed parts of London, the Docks were destroyed during the Blitz and many other Rotherhithe building were flattened. Charles Booth's 1889 Map Descriptive of London Poverty also includes Rotherhithe.
